Golden Llama, Basketball and More!

Monday, January 4th, 2010

We are only two weeks away from the Golden Llama, the Dizzy Llamas annual award and casino night. For those who will be going for the first time, a flat fee covers your dinner in chips. We eat, play, drink and have fun. It is the greatest “Green Tie” event in town.

For more details and award nominees, check out the information post on the message board here: http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=1487.0

We also have a set of awards call the Llamas choice awards. Separate from the player-of-the-year for each sport, the Llamas Choice awards are a chance for all our athletes to select their peers in categories like captain of the year, most improved and Rookie of the year. You can find the link on the information post or you can vote here: http://www.dizzyllamas.com/sports/awards/2009/

The winter season is mostly underway, despite a few weekend snow storms. If you’re still interested in playing some sports we’ve have some mid-season openings. Check out the about page on the DL website and email that’s sports coordinator to get started.

We are also fielding a pair of basketball teams this January after the success of our Summer basketball league, but we are still looking for players. If you played in the summer or would like to play indoor on Wednesday nights, signup on the message board here: http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=1492.0

Some changes are afoot with the Llamas! Three Llamas were recently presented with numbers. Adny Hatin will now don number 34, Sean Morgan 55 and Greg Martinage (Don’t tell him. He doesn’t get it until Tuesday). Also, Soccer Veteran Mark Goodman will be taking over the club’s soccer program for Mike Bizier, whose teams earned a championship and finals appearance during his year at the helm.

Congratulations to all of you and good luck in your new roles in 2010.

Finally, our Little Llamas sports equipment was a huge success. A lot of thanks to go around once again, but we easily topped last years total. Well done everyone. There will be a lot of happy tykes once the weather warms.

See you on the Field!

Llamas Basketball Signups, June Newsletter

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

The spring has gotten off to a great start. Dizzy Llamas Orange won the BSSC Dodgeball Championship, Gray Softball and our Sunday Soccer team are off to an undefeated start, and our CoRec teams in every sport are lined up for a successful Summer. For those who haven’t gotten their athletic fill yet, we have two new sports starting up in a few weeks, a cookout for everyone to attend and some new gear for sale.

Dizzy Llamas Basketball – This summer we are starting a fun, Llamas only basketball league for anyone looking to play basketball but hates the high cost and excessive tall people. Well, we’ll still have a few tall people, but come have a good time with some outdoor hoops. For more details, check out the signup thread here:
http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=1192.0

Dizzy Llamas Ultimate Frisbee – Like Basketball, this is a Llama-only league. Last year the Brighton Blouses came away with the title led by Adam Howe, Mike Bizier and Allie Greer. Games are fast-paced and fun, and everyone is invited to play. If you’re interested, take a look at the signup thread here:
http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=1191.0

*Deadlines for signups for both Basketball and Ultimate are approaching, so signup today.

This Sunday, June 14th, We’ll be having a cookout at Casey Field in Watertown as our four Llama softball teams face off in the DL Death Tournament. Even if you’re not a softball player you are invited to come down. I’ll be bringing hamburgers, hot dogs and some drinks, so if you want to bring treats too it would be appreciated. Grilling will start around 2pm. Casey Field is on Watertown Road, and you can park behind the school.

We are putting in a shirt order this Wednesday, so you have to act fast if you want to get some extra Llama shirts. We also have Llama baseball caps, socks and shorts available for anyone interested in purchasing them. All the info can be found on the Gear Order thread here:
http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=1197.0

Congratulations to Sean Morgan for being named May’s Llama of the Month, and Carissa Everett who was named an EMAAC player of the week for the Boston Division.

Spring Sports Registration Open

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Spring is almost here, fields are drying out and the Llamas are lacing up their cleats! The next few months are packed with exciting events as we gear up for the Spring/Summer season.

Spring Signups – Signups for our Spring sports are now open. Softball is back and the Soccer team is playing on Friday nights and Sundays. Once the weather gets a little warmer, both programs will kick off their practice schedule. Anyone who wants to play is welcomed, so find your shin guards and dust off your mitts. To sign up or get more information, check out the message board here: http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=1031.0

Dizzy Llama Bowlarama – Our Annual bowling extravaganza pits Llamas and friends against each other in a fun, two-round tournament. This year’s event will be on Saturday, April 4th at Lanes and Games in Cambridge. Last year Mike Gentile took home the title and will look to defend his crown against what we expect to be our largest turnout yet. There will also be a raffle featuring Red Sox Tickets and an iPod Nano as prizes. For more information about the Bowlarama, check out the message board here: http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=1016.0

Poker League Championship Tournament – For weeks some of our Llamas have been competing in small, but intense poker tournaments earning points to become the Dizzy Llamas Poker Champion. To cap off the season, we’ll be holding a grand poker tournament on Thursday April 9th open to all Llamas. For more information, contact Keith at Keith.Kantor@dizzyllamas.com

Sponsorship – We’re reaching out to all the Llamas as we try and find some team sponsors for the upcoming Spring/Summer season. With more than a dozen Llama teams and nearly 100 Llama players during the summer, there are plenty of sponsorship opportunities for local businesses. If you think your company or a local establishment would be a good candidate let us know. Sponsorship helps reduce clothing and equipment costs, lowers fees and allows us a lot more flexibility when planning events. To help out or get more information, contact Dave at info@dizzyllamas.com

Congratulations to Andrea Nykiel and Allie Greer for winning Llama of the Month for February and January respectively. Both are great athletes and wonderful people. TO see past Llamas of the Month, check out the team website here: http://www.dizzyllamas.com/sports/awards/

December also brings Llamas, Llads and Llasses, a charity drive that aims to keep kids active by donating sports equipment to children’s organizations. It is almost time for the annual Dizzy Llamas Invitational, miniature golf tournament bringing Llamas from all sports together. Whether you’re a good golfer or putrid putter, the Invitational is a festival of fun where you can meet new folks and chill with some old friends.

The tournament is Saturday, October 18th starting at Noon. It will once again be held at McGolf in Dedham. For more information and directions, check out the message board here:
http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=695.0

The event is open to all Llamas, whether your playing four sports or haven’t played in a few seasons. Feel free to invite friends and family. The more folks that come the better the competition. If you have any questions, feel free to email Dave at dave.claffey@dizzyllamas.com. I hope you all can make it.

The Fall season has gotten off to a great start for Dizzy Llamas teams.

- Three of our four Dodgeball teams are ranked in the top five of the BSSC standings, with defending champion White carrying an astonishing 95% winning percentage.

- Rain has soiled many of our outdoor seasons so far, but both of the Dizzy Llamas softball teams are undefeated heading into October.

- The soccer team earned their first win of the season Friday night, but it was also their first win in nearly six months after an injury plagued summer season. This season’s squad looks strong and should pick up where last spring’s BSSC runner-up team left off.

- After an excellent outdoor season, Volleyball moved back in doors for the Fall. They’ve gotten off to a slow start, but they’re still carrying a .500 record and are poised to make a run.

- The two Dizzy Llamas Football teams have also been slowed by the rainy weather. The’ve only got a pair of games in, but one was a blowout victory.

- The Llamas new look basketball team is enjoying life in a new league.

Congratulations to Cici Cassara and Danielle Sullivan for winning Llama of the Month for August and September respectively. Both are excellent athletes who go above and beyond for their teammates or any Llamas team that needs them. To learn more about them, and check out past LotM, check out the awards section of the Dizzy Llamas website: http://www.dizzyllamas.com/sports/awards/lotm/

As mentioned above, the Dizzy Llamas celebrated three championships this summer. Dizzy Llamas Gray took home the Softball championship in the BWCS, the DL Blouses won the EMAAC Ultimate Frisbee title and Dizzy Llamas White earned the organization’s first ever Dodgeball championship. These three championships, added to the two spring BSSC titles earned by the volleyball team, gives the Llamas five in 2008. That ties the 2005 campaign as the second most championships in a single year for the club. The record of nine in 2004 is certainly within reach.

Teamwork is the cornerstone of the Dizzy Llamas. Sometimes we are the most talented team on the field, sometimes we aren’t, but we are always competitive because of the great people we have in the organization who understand how much we can accomplish when we work together.

To those who fill in when needed, skip work or vacations to play an important game, and those who show up every week knowing your teammates are looking to you for support and success, I thank you all for your efforts. Congratulations to the dozens of players who played for those great teams, and the hundreds of others whose time will come. These championships are for everyone who wears a silly white llama on their chest.

Check out the website in a few days for the August Llama of the Month. Photos of the Ultimate league should be added in a few weeks, and hopeful all the fall sports will have some new photos soon enough. See you all on the field!

Dizzy Llamas Newsletter June 10th, 2008

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

The Summer season is in full swing, and our Dizzy Llamas our tearing up the competition. From the two-time BSSC champion indoor volleyball team to the top-ranked dodgeball team that has been dominating the Tuesday league, the Llamas are making their presence felt in almost every sport.

Sport Signups:

The second half of summer should be busier than the first, with four teams starting new seasons and LlamaRace 2008

LlamaRace 2008 – LlamaRace will bring DL members together for a fun and friendly competition with an adventure race through the city of Boston, followed by a party at a local bar. Small teams will race through the city, solving puzzles, following clues and performing tasks. It won’t be too strenuous, but it will be challenging for your llama brains! For more info, check out the signup thread here: http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=440.0

Ultimate Frisbee – If you’re free Sunday mornings, then this is a deal that can’t be beat. The Llamas will be fielding multiple teams in this fun, fit sport. Like all of our sports, new players are just as welcomed as experienced ones. For more info, check out the signup thread here: http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=432.0

Dodgeball – One of our staple sports is opening up signups again with a new season approaching. Duck, dodge and throw Tuesday nights with some of the best in Boston. Fill a hole on one of our great teams, or help form a new one. For more info, check out the signup thread here: http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=456.0

Men’s Basketball – Our basketball team is back for a new season on Thursday nights. One of our longest running teams is looking for new blood for their late summer and fall campaign. The good news is that dunking is not required. For more info, check out the signup thread here: http://members.dizzyllamas.com/index.php?topic=455.0

Hope to see you on the fields and courts.

Sports Overview:

The Dizzy Llamas volleyball program beat out the competition to win the Dizzy Llamas second Boston championship. Fueled by stars Dave McMahon, Dave Claffey and captain Adam Howe, the Llamas steamrolled teams in the regular season. In the finals, their biggest rival took them to a third and decisive game, but the Llamas’ cool approach and incredible athleticism won the day.

The Llamas four dodgeball teams have had varying results so far this season, but with all four expected to make the playoffs, odds are good for another championship for the Llamas. Team Green led by Shane Knowles has worked their way up to the top of the standings after a disappointing prior season. Ranked second, they are one of the only teams to beat the top team with unyielding consistency. Tom Boates, Ashely Parker and Team White have also worked their way to the top of the pack, with teams Blue and Black having breakout inaugural seasons.

The DL Softball program is midway through the summer season, with several breakout performances. Pitchers Victoria Catalan and Hemang Kotecha have kept teams competitive, while big hitters Ed Reynolds, Jen Kuzmick and Nick Bruce have been keeping pace with the best in the league. All three Llamas teams have already improved upon last season’s records.
