As mentioned above, the Dizzy Llamas celebrated three championships this summer. Dizzy Llamas Gray took home the Softball championship in the BWCS, the DL Blouses won the EMAAC Ultimate Frisbee title and Dizzy Llamas White earned the organization’s first ever Dodgeball championship. These three championships, added to the two spring BSSC titles earned by the volleyball team, gives the Llamas five in 2008. That ties the 2005 campaign as the second most championships in a single year for the club. The record of nine in 2004 is certainly within reach.

Teamwork is the cornerstone of the Dizzy Llamas. Sometimes we are the most talented team on the field, sometimes we aren’t, but we are always competitive because of the great people we have in the organization who understand how much we can accomplish when we work together.

To those who fill in when needed, skip work or vacations to play an important game, and those who show up every week knowing your teammates are looking to you for support and success, I thank you all for your efforts. Congratulations to the dozens of players who played for those great teams, and the hundreds of others whose time will come. These championships are for everyone who wears a silly white llama on their chest.

Check out the website in a few days for the August Llama of the Month. Photos of the Ultimate league should be added in a few weeks, and hopeful all the fall sports will have some new photos soon enough. See you all on the field!

Llamas Roll Through Championship Week

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Summer is coming to a close, and many Dizzy Llama teams finished their seasons in championship fashion by winning 3 titles this past week.

Dodgeball White had a stellar year, lingering at the top of the standings all season and gaining the 3rd seed for the playoffs. White’s path to the finals went through DL Black and DL Blue, who were a combined 23 wins better than last season. Down 2 games to 0 in a best-of-three championship, White battled back to force a 5th and final game. DL White’s Ashley Parker and Erin Calamari found themselves in a 2-on-2 battle for the title, and after a 10 minute standoff, it was Parker who took out the last opponent for the Llamas first BSSC Dodgeball Championship.

Sunday morning began early, with 4 DL teams facing off in the EMAAC Ultimate Frisbee playoff tournament. The top-seeded Blouses, led by Captain Adam Howe, and the underdog Ghettostars, with their two big men Pat and Nick Brown, cruised through a bracket of short-handed teams into the finals. After an 8-6 win by the Ghettostars to give both teams 1 loss, the Blouses showed why they were the #1 rank and won 7-3. Rookie Llama James Carney and multi-sport veteran Allie Greer also contributed to the inaugural EMAAC Ultimate championship.

Sunday was also a long afternoon for the DL Gray softball team, who had to play their Boston West semi-finals at noon, then if necessary the championship game at 6PM. The Llamas cruised through their afternoon games thanks to the big bats and solid gloves of outfielders Shane Knowles and Scott Tarentino. In the Championship game, the middle-infield combination of SS Michael Comtois and 2B Jen Kuzmick turned two double-plays and kept The Pirates off the base paths for most of the night. Comtois also dominated at the plate, hitting 2 home runs on the day. Tied up in extra innings in the final game, Mike Bizier found himself at third base, and with no outs Kuzmick nailed a line drive at the shortstop that was bobbled, scoring Bizier for the dramatic walk-off victory and a BWCS Championship.

The 4th seeded Llama Volleyball team will be fighting for a 3rd straight championship this Thursday, while the DL Green/White Softball teams will send their best and brightest to the EMAAC All-Star Game on Sunday.

Congratulations to everyone who earned themselves a championship this past week, and good luck in the Fall season.
